jaguarCats vs. Dogs

by Terry Spear

I love cats and I love dogs. My black and white cat Trixie was rescued from a Dumpster by the Kitty Welfare Society in New Jersey and came home with me long before I got married and started adding things like the husband, then the most loving yellow Labrador retriever you could ever imagine, then a son and then a daughter. Trixie was offended every time I brought something/someone new home with me.

But it didn’t take her long before she was curling up next to Dusty the dog, or lying on the floor waiting for my son—a toddler at the time—to crawl after her. When he’d veer off, crawling in a different direction, she’d look disappointed!

When I brought home baby number two, Trixie actually hissed and swiped at her. She’d had enough. No more new things added to the household that needed my attention. But then we got a black standard poodle puppy. And Trixie the cat had to suck it up.

So what does this have to do with the jaguars of Savage Hunger? Or wolves in the Heart of the Wolf series? Research!

Wolves are loyal, protective, family-oriented, and mate for life. Cats…well, they tend to cat around.

There is a definite pecking order in wolf packs and with dogs in a family, also. Dusty is a totally agreeable, loveable lab, who brought a baby bird that had fallen out of its nest to us to take care of. She was the most mothering dog we’ve ever owned. But when Charlemagne, the tiny poodle pup, tried to eat out of Dusty’s dish, the good-natured lab growled at her. She was the pack leader of the other dogs. Where did Trixie the cat fit in? She got to eat out of the dogs’ dish FIRST. If she came up to the dish when Dusty was eating, Dusty let her slip in and take her fill.

Wolves will fight to the death with other wolves that encroach on their pack territory. Jaguars are also territorial, but rarely kill one of their own kind.

It’s been very fun to incorporate all the differences into this new series that starts with Savage Hunger, where jaguars are clawed, dangerous, and hungry for love.

So what have your pets taught you? And who do you think wins the war in cats vs. dogs?

ONE lucky commenter will win the entire nine-book set of Terry’s award-winning Heart of the Wolf series.  And FOUR will get a copy of Terry’s latest release, Savage Hunger.

I have 4 little dogs, 2 are old so we bought them their own dogs. They have taught me unconditional love. They are there when I get home and when I am down they are right there with tails wagging. I have a human family, but there is something different about the love of an animal.

Like you, we adore our 4 legged family. We have 3 cats and 2 dogs. Each one of the critters definitely have their own distinct personalities so it would be so hard to say which species wins. Like our children, i could never pick a favorite, but the latest addition, a small terrior, sure rules the roost. It is so fun to watch the previously overweight weimer run and play with the pup and the cats scatter when he comes around.
    Thanks for the giveaway.

So many stories of pets. I've always loved dogs and cats equally on a case by case basis of course. My husband is a total cat lover but has somehow been won over by our little fuzzy-butt Buster. He's a totally comical white schnauzer mix who doesn't bark so much as yip but is super protective. He knows our property boundaries and if anyone comes onto them he lets us know about it even if they were in the house just a half hour before. We recently lost our cat, Shadow, and have decided to wait awhile before adding another feline to our family as much as the kids beg. Pets are such amazing family members and these shapeshifter series' always make me wonder what they're really thinking.

My dogs have have taught me that if you expect the best of people, the best tends to come out. My cats - just be yourself and don't concern yourself if others don't like you that way.

I don't think there will ever be a winner in this competition. Unless, of course, you count all of us lucky humans who get the chance to receive the love of our pets.

I've always been a dog person, so I'm rather biased in my opinion that dogs always beat cats. My dogs have taught me the real meaning of unconditional love. My beagle hates water, but he always wants to cuddle, even after I spray him with the water hose. My lab was super protective, and once went under a fence (only because he couldn't jump over) to chase away another dog that was threatening me. Dogs are great!

Well I'm a dog person so I think the dogs have it ;). I have 2 dogs right now Lucy and Emma. My first dog passed away in January his name was Rocky and he was my shelter pup. Rocky taught me unconditional love. He had a really rough start in life, I adopted him in 2006 and at the time thought I was saving him but it many ways it was Rocky who rescued me. No matter what I looked like or how bad my hair was if I was in a bad mood or just having a really bad day Rocky still always greeted me with a wagging tail and over eager eyes. He loved me no matter what :)
So for me the dogs have it :)

My cat has taught me that I shouldn't let other people's opinions affect me. He sure as heck doesn't care what us humans think and does what he wants, so I shouldn't care what other people think of me either!! My grandma's dog-used to be mine by grandma and grandpa needed something to spoil-has taught me that life should be fun! Take time everyday to "play" no matter what!!
